This may be why you cant find a job, even in a tight labor market
This may be why you cant find a job, even in a tight labor marketThis may be why you cant find a job, even in a tight labor marketIt may be a job seekers market right now, but not everyone is finding success as they apply for positions in theirhometown. One of the reasons why hourly, predominately minimum wage roles are going unfilled while potential workers remain jobless is spatial mismatch. The Urban Institute has released an analysis on spatial mismatch - how a mismatch between where jobs are located and where job seekers live can mean highunemployment ratesand lead tolonger spells of joblessness across the country.Using the most recent data from online marketplace Snag (which is from 2017), the Institute looked at 16 metropolitan statistical areas in the United States to see how widespread the problem is.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn Boston, for example, 41% of zip cod es in 2017 had far more Snag job postings than job seekers. In New York, that number dropped to 32%, but another 15% of zip codes had far more job seekers than postings. In Washington, D.C., 12% of zip codes had job postings that far exceeded job seekers, while 21% had the opposite problem. Many of these discrepancies boil down to affordable housing and public transit. Instead of jobs being a reasonable distance from ones home, open positions require extensive and potentially costly travel for workers who are filling jobs with unpredictable schedules, low wages, and a lack of opportunity for growth.Full-time jobs at restaurants, in retail or with customer service, for example, dont always entice qualified candidates because of low pay, bad benefits and other deterrents.Ultimately businesses will have to ensure that their jobs are attractive to potential employees, according to the analysis. This might be through ritterlich and predictable scheduling (many hourly jobshave unpredictabl e and irregular hours), improved benefits packages, transportation incentives, or higher wages. Local governments can help as well, by developing affordable housing near job hubs or transit, and by creating transportationroutes that cater to areas where service industry workers live.As employers struggle to find staff and job seekers search for work options that are sustainable, spatial mismatch is a roadblock for everyone. Workers must be able toafford to report to their jobs, and employers need to have access to a qualified workforce that lives just out of their reach. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Job Search Mistakes to Avoid in the Application
Job Search Mistakes to Avoid in the ApplicationJob Search Mistakes to Avoid in the Application7There is truth in the statement that finding a job is a full-time job in itself. It rings true in the amount of effort and time it takes to land that next position. It stands to reason then that the quality of the search should be comparable to a job as well- the better your performance, the better the results. It goes without saying that the application process is the first- and sometimes only- opportunity to make a good impression on an employer. Fair or not, the amount of time for most recruiters to decide whether or not to take an applicant seriously is two minutes or less. And yes, it is still necessary to spend a lot longer than that putting those materials together. Here are five job search mistakes to avoid in the application processDont be a serial applicant. Its unlikely that you have the skill set for positions in four different departments of a company. If you legitimately do quali fy for a role in IT and a role in marketing, be sure your titelseite letter for each position addresses and explains that. Whatever you decide to do, NEVER submit the exact same deckblatt letter and resume for multiple positions within the same company.Dont use a cookie cutter.Whether it is in email form or a traditional cover letter, every introduction you send as a candidate for a job should be unique. Personalize where you can, but only if you are sure you have chosen an appropriate person to address your correspondence to. Reference the specific job you are interested in and briefly explain why your skills or experience are the right fit. When you customize your cover letter, it shows an attention and a commitment to focusing on the task at hand.Dont be obnoxious. There is a line between enthusiasm and annoying. Definitely follow up when appropriate and craft your correspondence in a way that makes you stand out- in a positive way- to a company. Just make sure you arent overreach ing boundaries and becoming memorable for the wrong reasons.Dont forget to proofread.Yes, this is a sentiment that is expressed over and over and over again. There is a reason for that. Its tough for an employer to be confident in your attention to detail or to believe you take pride in your work when there are grammatical, spelling, or formatting issues in your application. Better yet, have a person you trust proofread your resume and cover letter. There is a reason copy editors have jobs.Dont be too verbose.Nothing makes a recruiters head spin quicker than cover letters and resumes that have way too much text. Be concise and precise with your words. White space is your friend- it will draw the eye to important information quickly. Only in rare circumstances is anything more than a two-page resume appropriate. It can seem like there are a lot of rules to follow when trying to get a job. Just like having a job, being mindful of certain protocols and procedures can go a long way in ge tting your foot in the door. Stay tuned for more tips to avoid mistakes during the interview phase of your job search.Readers, have you made mistakes in the application process of a job search that you realized after the fact? Both more challenging work and less bureaucracy/red tape were at 31%. Both lighter workload and more team building/work outings came in at 22%, while a better boss only claimed 19%.In terms of age, better perks was the most popular choice among those 18-34 at 47% and those 35-54 at 38%. But employees 55 and older were the biggest fans of less bureaucracy/red tape at 35%.Michael Steinitz, executive director of Accountemps, commented on the research in a statementEmployers shouldnt take a one-size-fits-all approach to improving employee engagement. 5 Ways to Effectively Up Your Email Game and Get Hired
5 Ways to Effectively Up Your Email Game and Get Hired More than 2.5 billion peoplein the world use schmelzglasle today, and mora than2.5 million emails are sent every single second. In fact, 61 percent of people report email to be very important for their job compared to 54 percent of people who expressthe same sentiment about the internet.More likely than not, you will have to use email in your next job search. Whether youre reaching out to the person who will be making the hiring decision or following up after an bewerberinterview, having stellar email skills will definitely improve your chances of getting hired. Here are some tips for you1. Emailing The Right Person + Personalization = Email SuccessYou are probably familiar with emails that take the following formatHi,Id like to reach out to binnensee if youre looking to hire position at X Company.I have degree and experience 1 and experience 2, and I think I will be the best fit for you.I look fo rward to discussing more if youre interested.Warm Regards,MarkWhile most people assume that emails like this are best because they areshort and concise, there areactually two problems with this format. First, the emailis often sent to the wrong person or to a generic email address. This is a recipe for failure. Second, it lacks personalization. Now, think about this modified versionHi John,Id like to reach out to see if youre looking to hire position at X Company. Im a long-time follower and admirer, and I feel I will really align with your goals and values such as X and X.I have degree and experience 1 and experience 2, which makes me the ideal candidate for helping X Company achieve the goals of X and X.I look forward to discussing more and sending you my C.V. if youre interested.Warm Regards,MarkNot only is this more personal, but also it includes more information on how you will align with the company values and help the organization achieve its goals. It is also being sent to th e right person. To increase your chances of getting hired, make sure you reach out to the right person. Ideally, this would be a key decision maker in charge of the department you want to work at. Avoid sending your email to a generic address if possible. Personalize your emails by including that persons name and by letting the person know that youre familiar withthem.2. Sending the Did You See My Email? Follow-Up Will Yield More ResponsesWe established earlier that more than2.5 million emails are sent every second. If you can count on one thing, it is the fact that the inbox of the person youre reaching out to is overwhelmed with both relevant and irrelevant emails.Every single other email in that inbox helps to drown yours out.Due to how busy our email inboxes are especially those of decision makers many people fail tofollow up when they dont get a response, or they follow up too late. This is simply a mistake.Following up can significantly boost your chances of getting a respons e, but it has to be done right. In a study of 16 billion emails involving 2 million users, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering found that 90 percent of people wont respond to an email after 48 hours. That means ifthere has been no response to your email after 48 hours, there will most likely never be a response. So whats the best thing to do? Follow up.3. Sending the Thank You Follow-Up Will Increase Your Chances of Getting HiredUnfortunately, many candidates have lost out on jobs because theyignored this seemingly unimportant type of follow-up email.According to research from CareerBuilder, a good 22 percent of hiring managers are unlikely to hire a candidate who didnt send a thank-you email after aninterview. This is because they feel that the candidate either isnt really serious about the opportunity or doesnt have good follow-through skills.Be sure to always follow up after an interview to thank your interviewer. Not only is this a great way to leave a good impression, but also it shows that you are conscientious a trait many recruiters look forin candidates.4. The KISS PrincipleIn an experiment involving 1,000 executivesfrom the Fortune 500 and Inc 500 lists, Contentlycofounder Shane Snow found that two key factors influenced email open and response rates sender name and subject line. Now, you cant do much about your sender name, but you can do a lot about your subject line. The first thing to understand about busy people is that they are, well, busy. Keeping things simple will lead to better responses for you. Snows experiment found that short, curiosity-driven subject lines will result in more opens than longer subject lines will.Similarly, you shouldkeepthe email itself short and simple. If there are key facts you want to highlight, use bullet points to highlight them.5. Use Technology and Automation to Make Your Job EasyMost importantly, you want to know what is working and what isnt. The good thing about email is that a lot can be automated these day s. Many email apps, like Boomerang, Sidekick, and Yesware, will let you track opens, schedule your emails in advance, and automate follow-ups if you dont get a response. Make use of these apps to instantly give yourself email superpowers. John Stevens is the founder and CEO of Hosting Facts.
